What this tool gives you

Five digests

SHA-1, SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 in one table.

Native speed

SHA-1/256/384/512 use the browser WebCrypto implementation; SHA-224 is computed in JavaScript.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SHA-1 and SHA-2?

SHA-1 is a 160-bit function from 1995 that is now broken for collisions. SHA-2 is a newer family (224 to 512 bits) that remains secure and widely used.

Should I use SHA-256 or SHA-512?

Both are secure. SHA-512 is faster on 64-bit CPUs and gives a longer digest; SHA-256 is the most widely supported and the usual choice for compatibility.

Is SHA-224 just truncated SHA-256?

Almost: it uses different initial values and keeps 224 of the 256 output bits, so it is not simply the first 56 hex characters of SHA-256.

Can SHA hashes be used for passwords?

Not directly. Password storage needs a slow, salted algorithm such as bcrypt, scrypt or Argon2; a bare SHA digest can be brute-forced at high speed.
