What this tool gives you
Hop-by-hop table
Each router with its hostname, address and three round-trip times, plus the raw transcript.
Latency jumps
See exactly which hop adds the delay when a connection feels slow.
IPv4 and IPv6
Switch protocol to compare the two paths; up to 30 hops are probed.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some hops show an asterisk?
The router at that hop did not answer within the time limit, usually because it is configured not to respond to traceroute probes. The path continues beyond it.
Is the route the same as from my computer?
No. The trace starts at our probe server, so the first hops belong to its provider. It is still useful to compare paths and to test a destination from another network.
Why does the trace stop before the host?
The destination or its firewall may drop the final probes. If the last responding hop is inside the destination network, the host is reachable in practice.
How long does it take?
Usually ten to twenty seconds, because every hop is probed three times and router names are looked up in reverse DNS along the way.
