Frequently asked questions
Why is my text double-encoded?
A string encoded twice shows up as <. Run the decoder a second time on the result to peel off the second layer of encoding.
Does decoding remove HTML tags?
No. Tags stay as text. If you also want to strip markup, pass the decoded result through the Strip HTML Tags tool.
Which named entities are supported?
The complete HTML5 list, over two thousand names, because decoding uses the browser parser itself rather than a lookup table.
Is the result safe to paste in a page?
Only after re-encoding. Decoded text contains raw < and & characters that must be escaped again before it goes into HTML.
