Frequently asked questions

Why does ping fail for a site that is online?

Many networks drop ICMP echo requests at the firewall. A website can be perfectly reachable over HTTP while ignoring ping, so use the HTTP Headers tool to confirm.

What is a good latency?

It depends on distance. Under 30 ms is typical within a region, 80 to 150 ms across continents. Consistency matters more than the absolute number.

Can I ping over IPv6?

Yes. Pick IPv6 in the protocol switch, or paste an IPv6 address and ping6 is used automatically. Hostnames are resolved to IPv4 by default.

Where is the ping sent from?

From a dedicated probe server in Europe, not from the web server that serves this page, so results are not affected by website traffic.
