Frequently asked questions

Is MD5 still safe to use?

For checksums, cache keys and deduplication, yes. For passwords, signatures or anything an attacker could forge, no: collisions can be created cheaply.

Can I reverse an MD5 hash?

Not mathematically. Short or common inputs can be found in precomputed tables, which is exactly why MD5 must not be used for passwords.

Why is the hash always 32 characters?

MD5 produces 128 bits, and each hex character encodes four bits, so every digest is 32 hex characters regardless of input size.

Does a trailing space change the hash?

Yes. Any change, even invisible whitespace, produces a completely different digest. Check for stray spaces when values do not match.
